I've had the good fortune of working with two good writers over the past 30 years, and they've made a huge impact on my work and have been great fun to work with.
Here's why:
Words matter. A writter approaches an assignment from a different vantage point...often one that you hadn't considered.
You'll find that your job is easier as a designer. You won't have to carry the entire burden of concept development.
You'll have someone to volley ideas back and forth with on your assignments, and you'll be able to get feedback on your layouts. They care how their words are presented as much as you care about your design.
Tips on finding a writer you can work with:
Keep in mind that in addition to talent you'll also want a writer you can work with regularly, which means you'll find a new friend:
Shop around for a writer with a 'book' that shows work similar to the kind of work you do. For example, if you do mostly web work, find a writer that does mostly web work.
Share a meal together. I work with a writer in Orlando [60 miles away], but we meet just to connect. Talk about what you're up to and listen to what they're doing. If there's no vibe, keep looking. If there is, do a job together.
Find a job small to work on together.
Be clear about the assignment and explain it clearly to your new writer. If working with a writer is new for you, let the writer know. Then turn the writer loose and let them do their job.
Work quickly. Keep your deadlines short. Be wary of missed deadlines or copy that feels like it's written 5 minutes before your phone call.
Once you've agreed on a concept [generally a headline], turn a design or two around quickly for the writer to look at. Then talk it out without ego.
But above all, have fun. Writers are great allies when you have a tough client.
